  • SURJ Boston Public Education Working Group Actions:

    1. Stop the FY2018 BPS Budget Cuts.
    The SURJ Public Ed group is taking up the call to oppose proposed budget cuts to Boston Public Schools.
    49 schools in the Boston Public Schools (BPS) system have been targeted for budget cuts. Last year, mass mobilization succeeded in getting the Mayor to reverse BPS budget cuts. We can stop the cuts this year too! ACTION: Call the Mayor and your City Councilors (see flier for scripts)!   If you live outside Boston, still call to voice your support and mobilize the people you know in Boston to do the same. The ask is simply for a larger budget allocation towards our schools.

    Call your own District City Councilor - find their contact info at http://arcg.is/1TbgiP92
    Call 4 at-large Councilors:
    Michelle Wu (617-635-3115);
    Michael Flaherty (617-635-4205);
    Annissa Essaibi George (617-635-4376);
    Ayanna Pressley (617-635-4217)

    2. Calls for Sanctuary Schools. On March 7, the City Council voted unanimously to affirm Sanctuary Schools in Boston! Thank you so much for all your hard work and for showing up at the hearing. We packed the Sanctuary with over 200 people, and it would have been impossible for anyone to deny that our community stands with immigrant students. The fight is not over yet- we're pushing for the City Council to pass an Ordinance (which can become a law), and for the Mayor to take a strong stand for Sanctuary Schools. ACTION: Can you join us in calling the Mayor at 311 every day until he takes a stand? It takes less than 5 minutes. You can use this script: "Hi, my name is (your name) and I live in (your neighborhood). I’m calling to ask Mayor Walsh to continue to be a leader in protecting immigrants in Boston by supporting strong sanctuary protections for every student in BPS. Will he support Sanctuary Schools?" ***If you live outside Boston, still call to voice your support and mobilize the people you know in Boston to do the same.

    3. BPS Teacher Support for BTU for All CampaignFour radical progressive teachers that have been organizing for years are running for BTU leadership in the election in June. The campaign team is comprised of Jessica Tang for President, Erik Berg for Vice President, Betsy Drinan for Secretary-Treasurer, and Johnny McInnis for Political Director. Their win would result in the broadest POC leadership within BTU. ACTION: BTU for All is building a network of teachers in every school to get out information and build support. If you know any BPS teachers, you can reach out and connect them to the campaign. Email Dave Jenkins at davidvictorjenkins@gmail.com for more info.
